Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away in a tragic way, which caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become cleaner or waitress in order for them to be able to survive. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She attended school in the area. But she only stayed in school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting profession. This was not an easy path to follow. While she was offered an interview in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. After a brief time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit her job. The New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. Also, she studied drama. She later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
